"Pogey bait" is a reference to sweets or candy, which was in usage in the military as early as 1918. The term alludes to food (and other luxuries) rarely afforded to grunts in the field. Bait In the New York area hoagie sandwiches are referred to as a “hero.” The term likely comes from New York Herald Tribune columnist Clementine Paddleworth who in 1936 described a sandwich so large “you had to be a hero to eat it."
